The Great Float-or-Sink Challenge!
Embark on a hands-on adventure to uncover why some objects float and others sink! You'll make predictions, conduct experiments with everyday items, and even make a sinking object float, discovering the secret science of density along the way.
The lesson goal is learners will understand the fundamental principles of buoyancy and density through hands-on experimentation. They will be able to confidently predict whether objects will float or sink and apply their knowledge to make a 'sinking' object float.

Learning Guide
Step-by-step guidance. No preparation required.
- 1
Introduction - Breakfast Buoyancy4 Min
- Have them observe breakfast items. Ask: 'What's floating or sinking?'
- Move on when Student points out at least one floating and one sinking item and offers an initial thought about why.

Explore & Plan - The Prediction Ponder7 Min
- Gather objects, water, and glasses. Ask: 'Which of these will float or sink?'
- Have them predict for each object, then gently place it in water.
- Move on when Student has predicted and tested at least 3-4 objects, observing the results.

Discussion - Unpacking the Density Secret7 Min
- Discuss results. Explain: 'Density is how much stuff is packed into a space.'
- Ask: 'Why did some things sink and others float? How could we change the water's density?'
- Move on when Student can explain in their own words why some objects float and others sink, relating it to density, and suggests how to change water's density.

Activity - The Floating Egg Mission!9 Min
- Fill glass 2/3 with water. Gently place the egg inside.
- Ask: 'How can we make the water denser so the egg floats?'
- Add salt one spoon at a time, stirring well after each.
- Observe the egg. Ask: 'What's happening to the water now?'
- Move on when The egg successfully floats in the saltwater solution, and the student can explain why.

Summary - Real-World Floaters3 Min
- Ask: 'What was the coolest thing you learned today about density?'
- Move on when Student shares one key takeaway from the lesson about density or floating/sinking.
