Kitchen Potion Lab
Transform everyday kitchen ingredients into bubbling, colorful 'spooky potions' while exploring how different substances interact. This challenge encourages observation, prediction, and creative problem-solving.
The lesson goal is learners will understand that mixing different ingredients can cause visible changes, like bubbling and fizzing, which are simple chemical reactions. They will practice observing these changes, making educated guesses about what will happen next, and use their observations to create their own unique 'potions'.

Breakfast Table Potion Prep5 Min
- Look at the water or juice on the table. Ask: 'If we wanted to make this spooky for Halloween, what could we add to it?'
- Ask: 'What kind of changes would make it look like a magical potion?'

Explore & Plan Your Brews8 Min
- Place all the ingredients on a tray. Have them pick two ingredients. Ask: 'What do you think will happen if we mix these two together?'
- Give them a small clear cup. Ask them to add a base liquid, then a small amount of another ingredient. Ask: 'Did it do what you expected? Why or why not?'
- Try a new combination, like oil and water. Ask: 'What happens when oil and water mix? Do they stay together or separate?'
- Move on when Children have made predictions for at least three different ingredient combinations.

Discovering Spooky Reactions6 Min
- Look at the different mixtures. Ask: 'Which of these mixtures changed in a big way? Did any of them make new bubbles or fizz?'
- Explain: 'When things mix and create something new, like bubbles or a lasting color change, we call that a **chemical reaction**. The fizzing you see is called **effervescence**.'
- Ask: 'Which of our potions had a chemical reaction or showed effervescence? How could you tell?'
- Move on when Children can identify at least one chemical reaction (fizzing) they observed and can describe effervescence in their own words.

Brew Your Ultimate Potion!9 Min
- Provide fresh cups. Ask: 'You've seen what different ingredients do! What kind of spooky potion do you want to make now?'
- Have them select and add ingredients to create their ultimate potion. Ask: 'How are you using what you learned about fizzing or mixing colors?'
- Observe their creation. Ask: 'What makes your potion the spookiest or most magical?'
- Move on when Children have created at least one 'ultimate' spooky potion demonstrating an understanding of how ingredients react.

Potion Master Reflections2 Min
- Ask: 'Which of your potions was your absolute favorite? Why?'
- Ask: 'What was the most surprising thing you learned about mixing things together today?'
- Move on when Children share their favorite potion and one key takeaway about mixing ingredients or chemical reactions.
