Earth's Secret Layers
This lesson explores the Earth's layered structure and the forces within it. Children will build a model of the Earth to visualize its layers and understand why digging to the 'other side' isn't possible, learning about heat, pressure, and gravity along the way. No advance preparation is needed beyond gathering common household items.
The lesson goal is learners will discover the amazing layers of Earth, from the cool crust to the super-hot core, and understand how temperature and pressure change dramatically as you go deeper. They will also grasp how gravity constantly pulls everything towards the Earth's center, helping them clearly explain why a journey straight through the planet isn't possible for humans.

Learning Guide
Step-by-step guidance. No preparation required.
- 1
Breakfast Earth Tunnel?5 Min
- Ask: 'If you could dig a tunnel right through this piece of toast/fruit, what would happen? What about through the Earth?'
- Move on when Child expresses initial thoughts or predictions about digging through something, showing curiosity about the Earth's interior.

Building Our Earth Model8 Min
- Gather modeling clay (3+ colors), a small ball, and a toothpick.
- Ask: 'How could we use these to make a mini Earth? What layers do you think it has?'
- Move on when Materials are laid out, and the child has a basic idea or a guess about how to build a layered Earth model.

What's Down There?6 Min
- Explain Earth's layers and gravity, then ask: 'What would happen if you dug past the crust? Where would gravity pull you in the middle?'
- Move on when Student can describe the main layers of the Earth and understand that heat and pressure increase with depth, and gravity pulls towards the center.

Our Deep Dig!9 Min
- Form the 'core' with one color of clay around the ball.
- Add a thick layer of a second color for the 'mantle'.
- Cover with a thin layer of a third color for the 'crust'.
- Use the toothpick to 'dig' through the layers. What do you notice?
- Move on when Student has successfully built a layered clay Earth model and attempted to 'dig' through it, observing the journey through the layers.
- 5
The Journey's End2 Min
- Ask: 'Could we really dig to the other side of the Earth? Why or why not?'
- Move on when Student can explain in their own words why digging through the Earth to the other side is not possible for humans, referencing at least two scientific reasons.
