Breakfast Sound Detectives
This lesson challenges children to become 'sound detectives,' exploring the initial sounds of everyday breakfast items. They will learn to identify phonemes (sounds) and connect them to graphemes (letters), enhancing their foundational literacy skills in a hands-on way.
The lesson goal is learners will understand that words are made of sounds, and they can hear these beginning sounds in breakfast foods. They will be able to match these sounds to letters and even create simple word groups based on what they hear.

- Ask: "What have you learned so far about sounds and letters?"
- Explain: "The sound you hear, like the /b/ in 'banana', is called a **phoneme**. The letter we write for that sound, like 'B', is called a **grapheme**. They work together!"
- Ask: "If 'toast' starts with a /t/ sound, what's the phoneme? What's the grapheme? How can knowing this help you read new words?"
- Move on when Child can explain what a 'phoneme' (sound) and 'grapheme' (letter) are in their own words and applies this understanding to an unmentioned word.
